My phone kept telling me storage was almost full, and I never understood why. I do not download huge files or keep dozens of apps I never open. Or so I thought.
Turns out the culprits were hiding in plain sight, and the Files by Google app found every single one of them in about ten minutes.
Why I Finally Tried Files by Google
I used to clean up my phone the hard way. I would open random folders, squint at file names, and delete things I hoped I did not need anymore. It rarely freed up much space, and it always felt like guesswork.
Files by Google skips all of that. Instead of making you dig through folders, it scans your phone and groups the biggest storage wasters into clear categories. You just review each one and decide what stays.
Here is how I used it to reclaim more than 10GB.
Step 1: Open the Clean Tab
- Open the Files by Google app
- Tap the menu icon in the top corner
- Select Clean
This is where the app does the heavy lifting. It sorts everything into categories like duplicate files, old screenshots, memes, large downloads, and apps you have not touched in months.
Step 2: Dig Into Your Downloads Folder
My Downloads folder was basically a junk drawer. PDFs I meant to file away, APKs I forgot to delete, ZIP files from a project two years ago.
To find the worst offenders:
- Open the Downloads category
- Tap the sort icon
- Choose Largest first
This alone cleared several gigabytes I did not know I had.
Step 3: Hunt Down Oversized Videos
I assumed photos were eating my storage, but a handful of forgotten videos were the real problem. Old screen recordings and clips I had already backed up elsewhere were quietly taking up gigabytes of space.
The Clean tab flags these large files automatically, so you do not have to scroll through your gallery hoping to spot them.
One thing worth knowing: most deleted files land in Trash for 30 days before they are gone for good. If you need the space back immediately, go to Menu, then Trash, and delete them permanently. Junk files are the one exception, since those are removed right away.
Step 4: Clear Out Apps You Forgot You Installed
Under Delete unused apps, Files by Google lists anything you have not opened in a while. I found three apps I had completely forgotten installing, each one just sitting there taking up space for no reason.
If you would rather keep an app around without it hogging storage, I wrote a full guide on archiving apps on Android instead of uninstalling them, which is a nice middle ground.
Making It a Habit
The real win was not the one time cleanup. It was realizing how easy this makes monthly maintenance. Now I open Files by Google, hit Clean, and spend five minutes clearing out whatever has piled up since last time. You can grab the app directly from the Google Play Store if you do not already have it.
A few minutes a month beats scrambling to free up space right when you need it most.
Files by Google is a free file manager app that helps you find and clean up storage on your Android phone. It sorts junk files, duplicates, large downloads, and unused apps into easy to review categories.
Yes, the app is completely free with no in-app purchases required to use the storage cleanup features.
Most deleted files move to a Trash folder first and stay there for 30 days before being permanently removed. Junk files are the exception and are deleted immediately.
Open the Downloads category inside the app, tap the sort icon, and choose Largest first to see your biggest files at the top of the list.
No. The Delete unused apps section only makes recommendations based on apps you have not opened in a while. You choose what actually gets removed.
Once a month is usually enough to stay ahead of storage issues, especially if you download files or take a lot of photos and videos regularly.
